MONTANA LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

Our grand daughter Malia, (age 15) graduated from the Montana Junior Police Leadership Academy on July 11th. There were 34 students from around the stat who participated in the 5-day 40 -hour course at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy here in Helena.

Their day began at 5:30 am and concluded at 10 pm. They participated in all the aspects of police work, some of which were: Learning how to use fire arms and tazer guns, the techniques of "taking down" a suspect, CSI (Crime Scene Investigation), completing a physical obstacle course, experiencing being in a closed room with tear gas, and Malia's favorite activity-- driving a police car around an obstacle course. They were also required to write reports on the activities of the day.

Malia enjoyed the training and is considering a career in Law Enforcement.

She is currently envolved in the Montana Youth Conservation Corp.

MontanaYES (Youth Engaged in Service) is a five-week, summer volunteer service experience for teens, ages 14 to 16. MontanaYES crews complete projects similar to our field crews, but there is a greater emphasis on community projects. But like the field crews, youth crews also participate in overnight, spike service projects. Environmental education, team building and recreation are emphasized. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a $250 service award. The youth who serve with YES come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Participants need to complete an application, interview and be accepted into the program. Two, five-week sessions are offered back-to-back in each community with crew size limited to six youth per session.

She participated in this program last year.

Need less to say, we are very proud of Malia, and her accomplishments. (along with our 7 other grand children of course)
